Statement on Refusal of Referendum Accreditation to ZIMRIGHTS

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) notes with concern the recent restrictions put by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), on patently flimsy excuses, on various organisations who applied for accreditation to observe the constitutional referendum scheduled for March 16.

Particularly, the Coalition condemns the refusal of the ZIMRIGHTS to monitor the referendum by ZEC purportedly because the organization and its officials have pending cases before the courts.

The decision is a brazen violation of the principle upon which the justice system, and hence all other public institutions, should operate on the premise that a person or in the case of ZIMRIGHTS, an organization is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As Zimbabwe moves towards a referendum and harmonized elections, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) calls for the Inclusive Government and ZEC to uphold the principles of fairness, openness and transparency.
