Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition demands release of arrested civil society leaders

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition demands the immediate release of Bulawayo Agenda officials arrested in Victoria Falls on Saturday, June 28, 2014. The Police arrested, Mmeli Dube, Butholezwe Kgosi Nyathi, Ntombiyezanzi Mabunda and Thulani Moyo for having held a meeting “without” police clearance. The arrests violate section 58 of the constitution which guarantees freedom of assembly and association.

We are concerned with the continued use of repressive laws such as Public Order and Security Act (POSA) as a tool to violate citizens’ freedom of assembly and association rights. Government should immediately ensure the full implementation of the constitution and abide by principles of constitutionalism to protect and promote the rights of all citizens.

We call upon the police to ensure that the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the arrested civil society leaders are protected. We urge government to initiate basic human rights and constitutionalism training programs for all the police to prevent needless violations of citizens’ rights.
