The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition was on Thursday 29 November awarded the the 2012 Human Rights Roll of Honour Award by the National association of Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO).
The award is given annually in recognition of outstanding work in the protection and promotion of Human Rights by a Zimbabwean organisation. The award also honors dedication and sacrifice in the pursuit of human rights, and an evidenced unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of human rights in the country.
NANGO Chairperson, Effie Ncube said the award recognises the critical role played by Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition since its formation in 2001 in investigating reports of human rights violations in and around Zimbabwe, exposing them, as well as keeping Zimbabwe on the agenda locally, regionally and internationally through advocacy work on the human rights and governance situation in the country.
"We recognize the work being spearheaded by Crisis Coalition in keeping the vision of a democratic and better Zimbabwe intact at the national, regional and international level. And take time to salute the unwavering commitment of the Coalition in this pursuit. It is a well deserved honor, which has been long in coming but always sure to arrive €
Said the NANGO Chairperson.
Mr Thabani Nyoni the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Spokesperson in response to the honor said:
"We are very much humbled by the recognition of our efforts by our partners in civil society. We are inspired by the award and we will continue promoting human rights, democracy and good governance in Zimbabwe. The award is testament to the fact that our work is not off the mark, that it is not only useful but appreciated, and this only serves to allow us to double our efforts in the pursuit of a democratic Zimbabwe where the rights of people are respected and protected. €
In statement from the Coalition Executive, signed by the Chairperson of Crisis Coalition Mr. Okay Machisa, tribute was paid to past leaders of the Coalition, who he said €lit the way and set the standard with regards to the Coalitions work and sheparded the organisation to where it is €. Mr. Machisa also thanked the Coalitions membership and staff team whose " Industry and sacrifices under difficult circumstances € he said had earned the honor.
2012 is the 3rd year that the Apex organisation has presented the award. On the two previous occassions the award has been handed to the illustrious Zimbabwe Lawyers for human Rights (ZLHR), for their Human Rights defense work.
This Human Rights Award, is the first honor that the Coalition has received as an Organisation since inception, although different leaders and members have been presented before with local and international accollades for their contributions to the struggle for Human Rights and Democracy in Zimbabwe.
