Jailing human rights lawyer is jailing justice -A poem for Beatrice Mtetwa by Betty Makoni

Jailing motherhood

Jailing womanhood

Jailing justice

Jailing reason

Jailing peace

Jailing human rights

Jailing humanity

Jailing the constitution

Jailing Beatrice the human rights lawyer is jailing the law

Jailing bail order from high court

Jailing the judge mentally

Police turned into judges

Judges now turned police

Upside down back to square one

Sight of harmless citizens in chains

Sight of faultless women in prison garbs

Sight of a woman lawyer held hostage

Sight of a woman lawyer abducted and captured

Sight of a woman lawyer in prison for asking

Prison garbs that once turned liberators into victims

Now turning human rights defenders into accused

Chains that held slaves for centuries

Rusty chains of imperialism inherited from old master

Now tying down the once liberated nation

Now holding its own in prison garb

Woman of justice harassed day and night

Woman of fairness mentally tortured

Woman who asks almost axed

Just asking for warrant of search

Is turned into warrant of arrest

Jailing a justice lawyer is jailing everything and everyone

Justice jailed is justice denied

Who then is not jailed amongst us?

Who then in sight of prison garbs remains free

We living in emotional jails

We living in poverty jails

We living in mental torture

We living in silence is living in jail

We living in fear and endless anxiety

We living in far remote places

We living in filthy jails owned by filthy leaders

We living in economic prisons

We living in destroyed justice

Our Justice long jailed

Courts of injustice and unfairness

Long jailed citizens ever in symbolic prison garbs

Long chained in rusty prison chains

Jailing a human rights lawyer is jailing justice
