19 SEPTEMBER 2012
The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) notes with grave concern reports on the continued use of torture by the police during investigations.
Today (19th of September 2012) the Forum has received reports that the police at Chitungwiza Police Station on 04 September 2012 brutally assaulted and tortured Mr Harrison Manyati, a suspect who was under police custody. Manyati (24), died from the injuries sustained 9 days later on 13 September 2012.
It is significant to note that prior to his death, the late Manyati had lodged a complaint of torture by police officers at the same police station. Until the time of his death, the police had not taken any action to ensure that the complaint is investigated and the perpetrators are brought to book.
It is sad to note that despite the Government of Zimbabwe's commitment to end torture in Zimbabwe, the police still perpetrate this heinous act with impunity. The Forum urges the Government of Zimbabwe to immediately ratify the UN convention against Torture and its optional protocol as well as criminalise torture in Zimbabwe in fulfilment of its commitment before the UN Human Rights Council.
Furthermore, the Forum calls upon the police to objectively investigate the matter and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and that the justice has been afforded to the victims.
