Statement by National Association of Non -Governmental Organisations (NANGO) Youth Sector on purported existence of umbrella body for youth organisations in Zimbabwe.
Following recent media reports in which some elements attempted to portray themselves as an umbrella body for youth organisations in Zimbabwe and mindful of the position of young people's organisations in Zimbabwe on this matter as deliberated in Musinah and other platforms and alive to the disgruntlements from different youth formations about this existence of a purported umbrella youth body, the NANGO Youth Sector representing youth formations that fall under its jurisdiction hereby distance themselves from a so called recently established "umbrella Youth Organisation € in the mould of National Association of Youth Organisations (NAYO) which claims to be "an umbrella board of youth organisations in Zimbabwe, €.
We hereby challenge NAYO to stop the deliberate misinformation that it is an umbrella body of all Youth Organisations in Zimbabwe and further implore them to define themselves clearly and unequivocally in terms of whom they really are and who they really represent. The idea of forming a youth umbrella body is a noble but delicate idea hence the need for it to be done the proper way. The existence of other youth networks and platforms such as Youth Empowerment an Transformation Trust, Crisis Coalition Youth Committee, NANGO Youth Cluster and many others who have a clear membership that they represent and do not claim to represent all youth organisations in Zimbabwe should serve as a good learning point for NAYO.
Best practices dictates that if youth organisations want an umbrella body, a platform for stakeholders concerned must be convened and that idea adopted and implemented.
We appreciate that with the right brains in place, this noble initiative, (if carried out correctly) could give a unified voice and approach to youth issues. It is our conviction that if the youth sector ever decides to form an umbrella body it could benefit from consulting other progressive organisations such as Women's Coalition, Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, Zimbabwe Law Society, Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development , Zimbabwe National Students Union amongst a host of many legitimate umbrella bodies, on how they made such big dreams a reality.
We therefore demand that NAYO desist from causing confusion by deliberately misrepresenting themselves as an umbrella body of the youth sector, for this will continue to cause chaos and confusion in the sector and to various stakeholders. We implore all stakeholders not to engage with NAYO on the basis that they are an umbrella body of youth organisations in Zimbabwe because they are simply not.
Youth formations in Zimbabwe's NGO Sector and Civil society remain open to engagement should NAYO feels that they have a legitimate right to continue masquerading as an umbrella body. NANGO Youth Cluster and other progressive youth platforms can create a platform for them to engage with our members so that they get firsthand the feelings of youth organisations in Zimbabwe about their claim.
We hope this shall not be necessary.
